First, our phones got smart. Then our watches, televisions, homes, and now, our cities. Thanks to research consortiums like the Autonomy Institute, it is time for these private innovations to go public.

In March, the Autonomy Institute announced plans to launch the Public Infrastructure Network Node (PINN) Pilot in partnership with EDJX. The program is to be first deployed in Austin and at the Texas Military Department, Camp Mabry. The Public Infrastructure Network Node (PINN) Pilot will trailblaze the development of autonomous solutions at ‘the edge’ with plans to expand from Austin to other major US cities and then globally.

The convergence of Edge computing, 5G, ITS, and IoT through the PINN will allow for the integration of autonomous cars and trucks, autonomous shuttles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and microgrids into our cities. These initiatives will increase productivity and reduce the cost of public services provided by municipalities, a dream for local taxpayers everywhere. The Autonomy Institute and its partners are working to make this a reality.

The PINN program will be rolled out through a series of Public-Private Partnerships (P3s) in continuous development to deploy 10,000 PINNs by mid-2022. City planners, IoT developers, and other interested technology providers are encouraged to apply for the limited PINN Beta Program.

“The Autonomy Institute will provide reference architectures and blueprints for the development of Autonomous Infrastructure Labs, Autonomous Mobility Corridors, and full Autonomous City deployments.

This will stimulate mutual testing and development regions to advance autonomous system deployment.”

The Autonomy Institute is working with Raleigh, Denver, Austin, Dallas, and Pittsburgh in exploring the implementation of autonomous infrastructure.
