Bastrop as the Epicenter for Texas Medical Cannabis

Written: August 2021

Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation (Texas Original, TOCC) continues to further its innovation in Texas medical cannabis with the breaking of ground on its new, state-of-the-art medical cannabis cultivation and processing facility in Bastrop, Texas.

The facility's completion is expected to satisfy growing patient demand for expanded access to medical cannabis in Texas. Soon, the vertically integrated facility will be the anchor for their network of patient pick-up locations throughout Texas. The 96,000 square foot facility will allow for further development and distribution of innovative medical cannabis products that meet the diverse needs of patients.

“Breaking ground on our next-generation facility is a significant milestone for our company and for the thousands of Texas patients that have come to depend on our medicine,” Morris Denton, CEO of TOCC said. “Our commitment to leading Texas’ medical cannabis market and to the patients we serve has never been stronger. This new facility will bolster our production capabilities and enable us to not only reach more Texans but also create, develop and distribute new medical cannabis products that meet the diverse needs of qualifying patients.”

The facility will include a hybrid greenhouse for cultivation, manufacturing labs for extraction, processing and refining, testing labs, packaging, dispensing, distribution, delivery logistics, and offices for administrative activities. Texas Original estimates the completion of the facility in Q2 of 2022 will bring hundreds of jobs to Bastrop County.

The signing of HB 1535 facilitated the expansion of Texas’ medical cannabis program by allowing PTSD and all cancer diagnoses to qualify under the Texas Compassionate Use Act. This legislation also increased the THC limit from 0.5% to 1%, allowing for more effective treatments and better utilization of one of the many medicinal compounds found within the cannabis plant.
